Priya and the Tortoise Race

Patience and steady work bring you farther than rushing ever could.

Priya loved to run. She raced everywhere—to the mailbox, to the swings, to the garden gate. Her little tortoise, Shelly, watched and walked slowly behind.

One morning, Priya saw a small orange flag across the meadow. "Let's race to the flag, Shelly!" she said. Shelly blinked her dark eyes and began to walk.

Priya zoomed ahead. The grass tickled her ankles as she ran. She laughed and waved back at Shelly, who kept walking.

Soon Priya saw wildflowers—purple and yellow and white. "I'll pick some!" she said. She stopped and began gathering a bouquet.

While Priya picked flowers, Shelly walked past. Step by step, slow and steady. Priya didn't notice.

Priya heard a stream bubbling nearby. "I'll splash my feet!" she said. She ran to the water and sat down on the bank.

The water was cool and fun. Priya giggled and kicked. Meanwhile, Shelly walked past the stream, heading toward the flag.

Priya jumped up. "Oh no! I forgot the race!" She ran as fast as she could toward the orange flag.

But when she got close, Priya stopped. Shelly was already there! The little tortoise stood calmly beside the orange flag.

"You won, Shelly!" Priya said softly. "I was fast, but I kept stopping. You kept going."

Shelly blinked her gentle eyes. Priya smiled and sat beside her friend. Together they rested in the warm sun.

From that day on, Priya remembered: it's not how fast you go. It's keeping on, step by step, that gets you there.
