Elisabeth and the Relatives They'd Never Met
Family grows bigger and warmer when we're brave enough to say hello.
Elisabeth held the white envelope carefully. Inside was an invitation to meet relatives they had never seen before—cousins and aunts and uncles who lived far away. 'What if they don't like us?' Elisabeth whispered.
Victoria and William stood in the doorway. 'We've never met them either,' said Victoria. 'Maybe they're nervous too,' added William, hugging his star sweater. Logan peeked from behind, eyes wide with wonder.
Victoria e William stavano sulla soglia. 'Neanche noi li abbiamo mai incontrati,' disse Victoria.
Aunt Christie came and sat beside them. 'Would you like to know a secret?' they asked gently. 'When I was small, I met new relatives too. My heart beat fast, just like yours.' Christie smiled and touched the envelope.
Zia Christie venne a sedersi accanto a loro. 'Volete sapere un segreto?' chiese dolcemente. 'Quando ero piccola, anch'io ho conosciuto parenti nuovi. Il mio cuore batteva forte, proprio come il vostro.' Christie sorrise e toccò la busta.
'What did you do?' asked Victoria. Christie's eyes twinkled. 'I brought something to share—a drawing I made. It helped me say hello.' The children looked at each other. Elisabeth nodded slowly. 'We could do that too.'
'Cosa hai fatto?' chiese Victoria.
The children scattered to create. William drew a bright sun. Logan found smooth stones from the garden. Victoria folded paper into birds. Elisabeth wrote a poem in careful letters. Kirby watched, tail wagging at each treasure.
The day arrived. The car hummed down the highway. Elisabeth tucked the poem in their pocket beside the envelope. 'I'm still a little scared,' they admitted. 'Me too,' said Victoria. 'Me three,' said William. 'Me four,' whispered Logan.
Arrivò il giorno. L'auto ronzava sull'autostrada.
At the door of a warm yellow house, new faces appeared—smiling, curious, hopeful. Elisabeth took a breath and stepped forward. 'Hello,' they said. 'We brought things to share.' Their voice was small but steady.
'Ciao,' dissero. 'Abbiamo portato cose da condividere.' La loro voce era piccola ma ferma.
William showed his sun drawing. Cousins clapped. Logan offered smooth stones, and an uncle said they were beautiful. Victoria's paper birds flew from hand to hand. Elisabeth read the poem aloud, and everyone listened.
William mostrò il suo disegno del sole. I cugini applaudirono.
Kirby romped with new cousin-dogs. Laughter filled the yellow house. Elisabeth caught Christie's eye across the room, and Christie winked. The envelope sat on the mantle now, a reminder of the brave first step.
That night, tucked in bed, the children whispered together. 'They liked us,' said Logan softly. 'We liked them too,' said William. Victoria smiled. And Elisabeth knew: family grows bigger and warmer when you're brave enough to say hello.
Quella notte, rimboccati a letto, i bambini sussurravano insieme. 'Gli siamo piaciuti,' disse Logan piano. 'Anche loro ci sono piaciuti,' disse William. Victoria sorrise.
