Nicholas lived in a small village at the foot of wooded hills. Every morning, he set out exploring with his faithful pony Ruddy. Together they discovered hidden streams and secret trails. One golden autumn day, they climbed higher than ever before.
Behind a curtain of branches, Nicholas spotted a forgotten orchard. Twisted apple trees glowed with golden fruit. Each apple bore a tiny star-shaped mark. Nicholas picked one and bit into it—it was sweet as honey.
«I'm the first to find this orchard!» Nicholas cried, eyes shining. «All these apples are mine!» He filled his canvas bag until it bulged and sagged. Ruddy nickered softly, but Nicholas didn't listen.
Back in the village, Nicholas hid his sack in the barn. He ate one apple in secret, then another. But instead of feeling happy, he felt lonely. The honey taste seemed less sweet now.
The next day, Nicholas returned to the orchard with Ruddy. He picked even more apples, filling two sacks this time. But when he passed village children on the path, he looked away and hurried past.
That night, Nicholas had a strange dream. He saw a small boy with rosy cheeks sitting alone before a mountain of toys. The boy was crying because no one would play with him. When he woke, Nicholas felt troubled.
The next morning, Ruddy refused to walk toward the orchard. The pony shook his head and nickered, then turned toward the village. Nicholas frowned. «All right, Ruddy,» he said at last. «Show me the way.»
Ruddy led Nicholas to the village square. There, three children played sadly with sticks, for they had nothing else. Nicholas remembered the boy from his dream. His heart squeezed gently.
«Attendez!» appela Nicolas.
«Wait!» Nicholas called. He ran to the barn and returned with his sack of golden apples. The children looked up, surprised. «I found a secret orchard,» he said softly. «And I want to share with you.»
Ruddy hennit joyeusement.
The children clapped and each took a star-marked apple. They bit down together, and their laughter filled the square. Nicholas felt a warmth grow in his chest, far sweeter than the honey taste. Ruddy nickered happily.
Nicolas sourit. «Bien sûr! Nous irons tous ensemble demain.» Ruddy inclina la tête comme pour approuver. Les enfants dansèrent de joie.
«Can we come to the orchard with you?» asked a little girl with shining eyes. Nicholas smiled. «Of course! We'll all go together tomorrow.» Ruddy dipped his head as if to agree. The children danced with joy.
The next day, Nicholas led his new friends to the secret orchard. Ruddy walked proudly at the front. Together they picked golden apples and filled baskets for the whole village. The shared work became a joyful game.
That evening, the whole village gathered for a feast. They made pies, applesauce, and golden apple juice. Nicholas shared the story of the orchard, and everyone thanked him. He understood then that a treasure is precious only when it's shared.
Nicholas fell asleep happy that night, Ruddy grazing peacefully near his window. He dreamed again of the rosy-cheeked boy, but this time the boy was smiling, surrounded by friends. Nicholas knew that even young Santa Claus had learned this lesson of sharing.
