Talla loved almost everything about life on the farm. He loved working with his family, feeling the earth under his feet, and watching the crops grow tall and green. But when it came time to go alone to the far fields, his heart would tighten. The rows of corn seemed to stretch forever, and the silence pressed heavy on his shoulders.

Talla told no one. His parents and his brothers and sisters worked hard every day, and they never seemed afraid. If he admitted his fear, would they think he was too small? Would they tease him? So he clenched his jaw, stuffed his hands in his pockets, and kept his secret tucked away.

One morning, his father asked him to check the tomato plants in the south field. It was far away, past the red barn and the old stone well. Talla nodded and tried to smile, but his stomach twisted. He took the basket and set off slowly, dragging his boots through the dust.

Halfway there, Talla heard a familiar bark. Whiskey trotted behind him, tail sweeping the air, amber eyes bright and warm. The family dog had always had a gift for knowing when someone needed company. Talla felt a small smile grow on his lips.

‹You came to keep me company, huh?› Talla whispered, gently scratching Whiskey's ears. The dog tilted his head and pressed his muzzle against the boy's leg. Together, they continued toward the south field. Talla's steps were a little lighter now, and his breathing a little calmer.

But when they reached the tomato field, Talla saw how isolated and quiet it was. The plants stretched in long green rows, and no voices carried this far. The wind blew gently, rustling the leaves. Talla's heart began to beat faster, and he clutched the small blue feather in his pocket.

Whiskey moved closer, pressing his warm flank against Talla's leg. The dog looked up at him, patient and calm, as if to say: ‹I'm here. You're not alone.› Talla took a deep breath and knelt beside Whiskey, resting his forehead against the golden fur.

‹I'm scared, Whiskey,› Talla whispered, the words finally coming out. ‹I'm scared of being alone out here. I'm scared my family will think I'm a baby.› Whiskey didn't answer with words, but he stayed still and solid, listening. Saying the truth out loud melted some of the weight in Talla's chest.

Talla stood slowly. Whiskey stood too, wagging his tail. Together, they began to inspect the tomato plants. Talla named each row aloud for Whiskey, and the dog sniffed the stems as if he understood. The silence of the field didn't feel so heavy anymore.

They found ripe tomatoes, red and gleaming. Talla picked them gently and placed them in his basket. Whiskey sat and watched, a faithful guardian. With each tomato harvested, Talla felt a little stronger. Maybe he wasn't alone after all, and maybe it was okay to be afraid sometimes.

On the way back, Talla picked up the small blue feather that had fallen from his pocket. He held it up to the light and smiled. ‹I'm going to tell my family the truth,› he told Whiskey. ‹I'm going to tell them I get scared sometimes. Maybe they'll understand.› Whiskey barked softly, as if to encourage him.

That evening, after dinner, Talla took a deep breath and spoke. He told his family about his fear of being alone in the fields, and how he'd kept it secret. To his surprise, his sister nodded and said she'd been scared at first too. His brother admitted he didn't like the dark barn at night.

His parents smiled warmly. ‹Everyone is afraid of something, Talla,› his mother said gently. ‹What matters is talking about it and asking for help when you need it.› His father added: ‹And sometimes, having a good companion like Whiskey helps too.› Talla felt his heart grow warm.

That night, Talla fell asleep with Whiskey lying at the foot of his bed. He held the small blue feather in his hand, a symbol of his newfound courage. He had learned that true bravery wasn't never being afraid. It was sharing your fear with those you love, and going on despite it all, together.
